This study researched about the composer's life, major works, musical features and interpretation of the lyrics included in the gradxiation performance program and came to the conclusion as follows.
English composer and conductor Landon Ronald was also involved in many activates as a pianist, music critic, educator etc. His masterpiece, song cycle A Cycle of Life, is a piece that brings out the romantic music effect well in English vocal music. The poetry of Harold Simpson, a poet and writer who was not well known at the time, was used for the lyrics of the song cycle collection. This piece is composed of 5 songs; the first Prelude, Second Down in the Forest (Spring), Third Love, I have won you (Summer), Fourth The winds are calling (Autumn), Fifth Drift down, drift down (Winter). The names of the seasons were added to each song.
The first song is a prelude and it is a song about joys and sorrows of our life. Our love and lives are in a life cycle like the flow of a river that does not stop and we don't know our life's beginning and end but we must live the best we can until the end. The first song expresses all the implications of the 5 songs in the song cycle collection. The accompaniment is dramatic and the harmony and rhythm, which seems to express the vast movement of life, connects the maximization of the opening of the vocal melody well. Sing with your heart to the lyrics and melody with breath and rhythmic tension in the important poetic dictions and the parts of the vocal melody that finish with grand and beautiful high notes.
The second song represents spring as a time where everything is a first in childhood of life and sings about excitement, expectation and novely. In particular, the song uses a short moment of recitativo and maximizes the musical piano, adding tension and concentration to the vocal melody. It is a story about singing of spring and expecting love and one sings with more emphasis and delicacy.
The third song is about the love of youth, the golden age of life. It is a song about the peak of life and love representing summer, the hottest and most passionate of the four seasons. The song flows very quickly and begins with an accompaniment that seems to be moving up to the summit and the vocal melody expresses love passionately and in a fast movement. In particular, it finishes the end of the phase by maximizing the cry of love, comparing it to summer and life.
The fourth song is a song that represents autumn, as if one had spent a hot and urgent youth of love and had a calming middle-aged and elderly life, let go of what needs to be let gone and greet the next life and season. One sings like the wind blowing and the leaves falling irresistibly, singing about the time of life that we have to accept, recalling the love of the past, before the second half of ones life, which flows so fast, adding regret and loneliness to one's brilliant love, leaving a lingering impression.
The fifth song is a song that represents winter, the last season which is a period facing the end after a long life, in other words preparing for death at a time of old age. The death of old age is not the end of fear, darkness, or despair, but is transcended into a pure and clean moment like white snow falling from the sky in winter, singing that death, the end of life, is a cold but warm and peaceful moment. It's a song that exemplifies another new beginning in the endless cycle of life,.Efficiently portray the lightness and cozyness of snow and sing well with the flow and lingering feelings of the piano(p) and forte(f) in less colorful and simple vocal rhythms and notes which express the old age of life.
In Ronald's A Cycle of Life, it is important to understand and express the deep philosophical meaning of season and life. I hope this thesis will be of great help to those who clearly understand and play the work of Randon Ronald.
