Through various records and Meishoki records published during the Edo period, we looked at the history of Senju Ohashi Bridge and Ryogoku Bridge built on the Sumida River in Edo, and the bridges related to Nihonbashi Bridge built on the Nihonbashi River, which is a tributary of the Sumida River and flows out of the Edo Castle moat. We also looked at the role of the bridge, changes in the surrounding environment due to bridge installation, changes in citizens’ lives, and the meaning of bridge space.
Although the structure and location called ‘bridge’ in Edo are not traditional attractions, the history of Edo’s development was confirmed through the installation and maintenance process of the bridge, and it is not only a convenient structure for the movement of people and goods, but also a space. It was clear that it was a place with important meaning. Furthermore, it affects the lives of not only those who live in Edo but also many people who come and go, and at times becomes a place of leisure where one can enjoy entertainment and amusement and recharge their life energy.
While the above analysis focuses on the three representative bridges built in the Edo period, we will examine Shin-Ohashi in 1693, Eitaibashi in 1698, and Okawabashi in1774, which were built after Ryogokubashi, and verify their relationship with Edo famous places depicted in ukiyo-e.
