In the age of global warming, what matters most to us is that existence materializes. Our crisis of the sixth mass extinction highlights the importance of the fact that we, including the planet, matter or materialize. To materialize, as opposed to abstract, means to matter, or to be important, and thus to have value. In other words, the ultimate value of our time is the materialization of ultimate concern. The future of our civilization depends on our materialization of this ultimate concern.
The materialization of the ultimate concern that we experience through the crisis we are facing can be generated through generational differences, and the motivation for this difference to be generative requires multilateral cooperation, but especially ecumenical cooperation, as well as interfaith cooperation. Of course, this cooperation also includes cooperation with irreligions. The motivation for our cooperation is, of course, hope, but that hope cannot or should not be optimism. It is a hope that embraces the possible in the midst of the im/possible, a hope that does not turn away from the despair of the times, but rather embraces it. But it is not a hope for the miraculous intervention of an omnipotent being; it is a hope for a new heaven and a new earth, theologically speaking. It is a hope that, in the midst of our despairing reality, must, in the words of James Baldwin, be “invented anew every day.”
