“갓생” (pronounced “gat-saeng”) is an online neologism that combines the words “갓” (gat, meaning ‘god’, though it is really used to mean ‘best’) and “생” (saeng, meaning ‘life’). It originally referred to teenage idol fans taking care of aspect of their lives that fall outside of idol worship, but it has over time evolved into a more general sense of living a productive and successful life (“갓생살기”, pronounced “gat-saeng-sal-gi”). It became a widespread meme during the COVID-19 pandemic: As the pandemic caused many people to feel uncertain and anxious, “갓생살기” emerged as a way to cope with these challenges, particularly for individuals in their late teens. As the meme became more popular, it became linked to the concept of a “ritual life”. The present article examines the changing meaning of “갓생” and the trend of “갓생살기”, and it then suggests that “갓생살기” can be understood as a ritualized behavior.
It also suggests that the ritualized aspect of “갓생살기” provides clues to conceptualizing the changing religiosity of digital natives.
