Existing research about the control of human behavior under online anonymity has yielded inconclusive results for two main reasons. Firstly, the focus has been on partial aspects of the self-concept, neglecting its multidimensional nature. Secondly, most studies have relied on perceptual measures for online anonymity, leading to common method variance issues. To address these problems, this study investigates whether multiple self-concepts concurrently control human behavior in anonymous online communities, using objective data from online communities.
Data for this study was collected in two steps from Ruliweb, a large online discussion community: First, using web scraping methods, thousands of discussion threads were gathered from over 500 contributors. Second, a survey was conducted among the authors of these arguments for the self variables. The results show that online anonymity marginally reduces private self-awareness whereas private self-awareness significantly influences user behavior in terms of argument quality.
