Artistic instincts in humans have manifested with religion even before they formed a systematic culture. Religious art formatively captures the spirit of religion and the discipline of faith in tools designed to conduct religious rituals, contributes to progress across religious cultures, and serves as a bridge between a world of humans and that of gods. Likewise, the art of the Catholic Church has tried and made progress to meet certain needs in terms of great artistic values and technical skills to cover religious content. The Eucharist is one of the most important rituals in the Catholic Church, and the tools used for the Eucharist are produced and considered valuable as artworks capturing religiously symbolic meanings. Holy ritual utensils, which are tools used in the Eucharist, are made in compliance with guidelines established by the Second Vatican Council(1962~1965). According to World Christianity and Mission(2023) by the International Bulletin of Mission Research on the global population, the Catholic Church accounts for the largest number of believers as a single religion. The Catholic Church has been spread across various countries, and there are diverse examples of religious art. This paper aims to establish a guideline on how to represent religious art by conducting a literature review on guidelines about holy ritual utensils and analyzing chalice art as one of the contemporary holy ritual utensils, which has influenced the Catholic Church in Korea and abroad, in terms of the characteristics of a region where it was introduced and the features of its form.
