This study meta-analyzes the effects of the presence of non-contact learning on academic performance in universities during the COVID-19 in order to provide guidance for the design of face-to-face and mixed courses in the post-pandemic era. The authors analyzed the effect size and important variables of non-contact presence on learning outcomes in 65 Korean journals and theses from 2020-22 and compared the effect size of presence during and before the pandemic. The factors of presence were teaching, cognitive, and social presence, and academic performance was divided into areas of learning satisfaction, academic achievement, and learning persistence. The results showed that cognitive, teaching, and social presence had the highest effect sizes and were significant for academic performance. The effects of non-contact presence on academic performance were higher than in pre-pandemic meta-analyses across all domains. The results of this study are meaningful in providing evidence for university online instructional design by synthesizing individual studies on the presence effect of non-face-to-face learning and comparing them with those before the pandemic.
