Most workers spend time commuting to and from work. Commuting affects not only personal time management but also social labor resource management. Physical and mental fatigue associated with commuting accumulates during working hours; therefore, commuting influences work performance and individual satisfaction. However, commuting has long been considered an unavoidable use of time. As a result, the personal and social effects of commuting have not been fully considered, even though Korean male workers spend significantly more time commuting than workers in OECD countries. Using data from the Korea Employment Information Service, this study empirically examined whether commuting affects individual job satisfaction and turnover intention. We focused on employed Korean young adults who graduated from university or college less than a year ago. Commuting is defined in this study as both physical travel distance and commuting hours. This study highlights that personal and employment characteristics are closely related to job satisfaction and switching. As per the results, long commuting hours and physical travel distance negatively affect individual job satisfaction and turnover intention.
