Although Naoya Shiga is an artist with strong individualistic tendencies, this study attempted to re-examine his as an artist who also adopts a dualistic view of imperialism. Focusing on the living organisms in his works, we analyzed his works according to the evolutionary mechanism of competition for survival and gluttony. In the biological mechanism of the food chain, the weak are sacrificed by the strong. The protagonist, who was thought to be the weak, becomes strong and sacrifices other weak individuals. A chain of food chains linking the strong and the weak appears and takes a double stance. By revealing the evolutionary principle whereby only the strong survive, it was possible to examine the artist’s attitude legitimizing the government’s view of imperialism. However, behind the author’s representation of legitimacy, there is also a dual aspect of antipathy to the government’s intentions.
