This study analysed the spatiotemporal changes of regional frost events and determined their relationship with the bloom dates of spring flowers during the past 35 years in South Korea. Based on time-series data observed at 36 weather stations across the nation, study results showed that the number of frost days was greater in inland areas compared to the coastal areas, and it increased with increasing latitude. The variations of frost days were very high at the national level, and large urban areas were found to have significantly fewer frost days than small ones within both inland and coastal regions. It was also found that four major spring flowers had bloomed 1.3~1.8 days a decade earlier than before during the study period. Since the average rates of change in the first and last frost events have been greater than those of the bloom dates, potential inhibition of plant growth is expected due to an imbalance between plant phenological processes and climate warming in the future.
