For the interface design of an IoT (Internet of Things) multi-device system, a designer must consider the composition of devices, functional distribution, consistency of user perception and interaction, and the continuity of interactions when a transition occurs between devices. A designer faces difficulties predicting complex problems and suggesting design solutions for the interactions between devices and users. This research studies the inter-usability of different systems and presents design guidelines.
Methods
Inter-usability design guidelines were suggested based on insights from evaluating personal IoT systems. First, the six multi-device systems were evaluated by the number of designers. Second, the evaluation result was analyzed concerning the system features, and the interrelation of inter-usability factors was observed. Third, interface design guidelines were derived from the findings.
Result
The devices of an IoT system should be composed to extend the user experience or supplement the product interface, and functions and interfaces should be carefully distributed to the devices to avoid discontinuance during the user interaction. It is necessary to present a consistent interface design so a user can perceive the product and the application as the same system. A consistent interface becomes more important for a system involving time or place changes during the device transition and a user interacting with the devices separately than for a system where a user interacts with both devices simultaneously. The immediate functional execution and interface feedback provide continuity of the system where a user interacts with the product and the application simultaneously. For a system involving time or place changes during the transition, a seamless user experience means providing information on whether the system interaction is continuing or whether the connectivity status of devices has changed.
Conclusion
Based on the study of six personal IoT systems, this research has gained insight into the interrelationship of devices composition, consistency, and continuity of multi-device systems. This study provides a practical understanding of inter-usability and interface guidelines for IoT products and application design.
