Background
Korean MFDA-issued infographic “How the COVID-19 Vaccine Works” is an expository diagram of a biological process, published to encourage people to trust vaccine safety and get vaccinated. Nevertheless, the information is too insufficient to accurately explain what is injected with the vaccines and exactly how they work. Moreover, the graphic’s wide aspect ratio diminishes it on vertical, small screens such as mobile phones.
Methods
In response, we propose alternative infographics designed with more accurate and sufficient information, to enable the readers to recognize disinformation on vaccines when they see it. Alternative graphics were designed in different aspect ratios—Exp1(wide), Exp2(tall), and Exp3(slideshow)—to find out the most effective design that can (1) reduce the readers’ cognitive load caused by lengthy information in the alternative graphics, and (2) be effectively displayed as part of mobile news articles. The effectiveness of the infographics was tested in an online survey with 300 participants, by testing five hypotheses.
Results
The analysis of data shows that the alternative designs significantly improved the participants’ comprehension(H1) and disinformation discernment(H2) scores. The Exp3(Slideshow) design caused the least cognitive load measured in perceived complexity(H3a)·information length(H3b)·effort(H3c). Participants rated the usefulness of the revised information higher(H4) than the current one, while preferred the Exp2(tall) design the most as a mobile news graphic(H5). Gender differences exist in the participants’ comprehension(H1 & H2) and the perceived usefulness of the information(H4).
Conclusions
Infographics for the public should be composed and designed considering the context where the readers see them, how the readers comprehend them, the goal of communication such as recognizing fake news, and the readers’ cognitive load. An expository diagram published as a mobile news graphic can benefit from a tall aspect ratio design that supports the reader’s serial information processing, or a slideshow design if it contains lengthy information.
