In this paper, I analyzed the movie “Muddy River,” not by talking about the interaction and friendship of boys, but by the projection of the naked life of the lower-class people in Osaka. I also stared at the rich scars of the war in the background. A muddy river like Cortal, where abandoned garbage peculiar to black-and-white movies floats throughout the movie. The low-ranking people who live along the river and are late in the society depict a reality wherein they have no choice but to live slowly, although they have a hard life in the mud. The fact that the river is stagnant and unable to flow in the mud is a metaphor for life strewn with various obstacles. The film emphasizes the cruel reality symbolized by the “Muddy River” for each scene and character. The black and white format further highlights this. Amidst this, the scene at the end depicts a certain kind of hope: the Kiichi family was not descending toward the lower reaches of the river, but was entrusted to its upper reaches.. Second, my grandmother next door compared Nobuo’s fate to a “tree that grows in water.” Even in the mud river, Nobuo will grow wormwood with hard-rooted trees.
