Background: While the demand for flip phones is increasing with the launch of flexible display smartphones, studies related to the user experience of flip phones are still insufficient. This study aims to suggest design directions for the improvement of better flip phone UX based on an in-depth analysis of the user experience.
Methods: First, we defined the related terminology and derived four design elements for flip phones (usefulness, folding usability, desirability, and connectivity) from previous studies. Then, apps that have flex mode functions and high usability were selected. An in-depth interview was conducted with users who use flip phones based on the design elements. Afterward, we used an affinity diagram to derive the needs and pain points, and SWOT analysis matrix to derive and classify strengths, weaknesses, opoortunities, threats of flip phones.
Results: As a result of SWOT analysis, we found that users were simultaneously experiencing positive and negative experiences in terms of the usefulness, folding usability, and connectivity of flip phones. we could also find specific needs in flex mode and cover display. Based on what we discovered, We were able to suggest four strategic directions for a better flip phone UX: expanding the cover display apps(S-O), moving the control area to the bottom when using flex mode(S-T), applying flex mode to shopping apps(W-O), and stimulating flex mode update(W-T).
Conclusions: The significance of this study is to theoretically identify the user experience of the flip phone and to present a strategy customized to the flip phone. As this is a basic study on flip phone user experience design, We expect our initial research may influence related academic research on more advanced flip phone products and interfaces in terms of user experience.
