This study examined the “opening and closing characteristics” of apartments, which are universal residential spaces in cities. The “Community of Choice” is a new form of community that forms voluntarily and actively chooses to participate if needed. Specifically, the study attempted to understand the characteristics of the Community of Choice formed in apartments in the city by analyzing the participation behavior of “community B” formed around apartments in Daejeon City and the principles and conditions under which these communities can operate. The study conducted in-depth interviews with four residents, including representatives and practitioners of Community B, and conducted a ‘case study as a qualitative research method’ by collecting evidence from data sources, such as records and references. Community B’s participation process could be defined as an expression of individual interests, and it maximized the motivation, purpose, vision, and profit. On the other hand, community B’s participation emphasized the individual’s ‘right to choose’ but increased accessibility, sensitivity, and responsiveness to residents’ participation itself and became a starting point for experience in participatory citizenship. Currently, Community B must develop measures to overcome financial and institutional limitations for long-term and continuous operation. Nevertheless, Community B proved that urban apartments have optimal conditions for forming a Community of Choice in terms of open and close space structure, autonomous functions and services, and existing networks. The study is meaningful in that it has suggested implications for the necessity and possibility of a new community that conforms to the social and cultural context of urban residential spaces.
