The COVID-19 pandemic, an apolitical issue, has been politicized across many countries since 2020. This politicization of COVID-19 aggravates the current political polarization of many democracies, which is regarded as one of the main culprits of today’s crisis of democracy. This paper explores how discussions on COVID-19 vaccination in South Korea differ between ideological and partisan groups by focusing on social media, today’s main channel of the distribution of political discourse. From the results of the word network centrality analysis and topic modeling of Twitter messages, this study finds that news on vaccination and information on vaccine reservation are the most often discussed topics among the liberal and pro-government groups, while vaccine side-effects and blood clots are reported as the prominent issues among the conservative and anti-government groups. For the anti-government group specifically, concerns about the government’s vaccine policies are also widely discussed.
