Eugenics is a central ideology of Western modern industrial society, a theory formed by the bourgeoisie to defend their vested interests against the proletarian class. Siga Naoya was the first bourgeois writer‘s group in Japan. In that regard, it was easier to internalize eugenic ideas. This novel describes a eugenically inferior character who is deemed undesirable in the theory of Social Darwinism. Eugenics is deeply related to social evolution theory. Although “Taisho culturism” is known to be opposed to eugenics and social evolution theory, it shares some characteristics with Social Darwinism and Eugenics in that it is an elite culture that values effort.
