The purpose of this paper is to offer a new critical perspective on the religious thought of John Dewey who is widely considered one of the most influential American philosophers in the twentieth century. In A Common Faith, which represents his mature view on religion, Dewey seeks a third way between supernatural religions and militant atheism by emphasizing the value of ‘the religious’ as a quality of experience. But even as he took this middle path, Dewey held a radically negative opinion on an essential aspect of supernatural religions. Unlike much of the extant scholarship on Dewey’s religious thought, this paper finds his negative perception of the epistemic status and intellectual value of supernatural religious beliefs problematic. Also, in order to construct a generally acceptable critical perspective on this topic, I use some of the writings on religion by four contemporary philosophers: Alvin Plantinga, William Lane Craig, Thomas Nagel, and Jürgen Habermas. Ultimately, the paper suggests a pluralistic democracy where many existing religious students and citizens receive recognition and respect from secular society as an alternative to Dewey’s ideal community established through the abolition of supernaturalism.
