The purpose of this study is to examine how a life of self-transcendence is possible through the understanding of solitude in Buddhism and Christianity. Solitude is a way to self-transcendence. Solitude is not an end in itself, but a way to go through for greater love. Śāntideva invites us to leave the world and stay in the forest, stop vitarka and remain in solitude in body and mind. Thomas Merton leaves society and stays in the desert, inviting us to a life of solitude in the world but not of the world. But if solitude does not help a life of love and mercy, then it is of no value to them. They resolutely reject the selfish solitude that seeks to completely exclude others. The solitude away from the world and people is paradoxically in order to build a deeper relationship with them. Altruism without selfishness is the true value of solitude. For them, this is achieved by reconstructing a new concept of the 'self', that is, by expanding the scope of the 'self'. Śāntideva invites us to transcend any discrimination in the whole world of sentient beings and raise a mind for the happiness of others through the meditation of “the sameness of self and otehrs” and “the exchange of self and others” in solitude. Merton invites us to move on to a life of transcendence in which we become one with everyone, even with God, by discovering his true self.
