Due to development of the information technology (IT) industry, the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution has arrived and our lives and environments are rapidly changing. Perhaps the development of technology is due to the desire for a more comfortable world for humans. As such, discussions on whether technology changes society or the needs of members of society develop technology continue, and this phenomenon needs to be considered in terms of the relationship between technology and design. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics and differences of the design history of the times, how design has been developed in terms of technology and consumer needs, and the implications of technology-oriented design and consumer-centered design. In conclusion, through this study, it can be seen that the technology-oriented design is reflective, rational, realistic, direct, and simple, and that the consumer-centered design has empirical, emotional, complex, and metaphorical ambiguity. In addition, design has developed in response to the needs of technology and consumers in the times, and technology-oriented design and consumer-centered design imply conflicting design information, but are developing society through complementary relationships.
