This study investigated the effect of affordance-based play-oriented early childhood empathy education programs on young children's empathy ability, emotional intelligence, and prosocial behavior. The participants of the study were 36 5-year-old children (18 in the experimental group and 18 in the comparative group) at S-kindergarten in Gyeonggi-do. From June to July 2021, affordance-based play-oriented early childhood empathy education programs were applied to the experimental group, and empathy education activities centered on story sharing were applied to the comparative group. To verify the effectiveness of the program, empathy ability, emotional intelligence, and prosocial behavior pre- and post-tests were conducted on two groups of children, and T-test and ANCOVA were conducted to verify differences between groups. The results showed significant differences in the total score and sub-factors of empathy ability and emotional intelligence (self-control, others recognition, others control), and prosocial behavior (control of personal emotion, interpersonal skills). This study is meaningful in realizing the focus of the current curriculum, expanding empathy education contents through animals and plants, disabilities, multiculturalism, and gender equality, confirming the possibility of environmental and play-oriented empathy education, and confirming the possibility and value of considering affordance in the kindergarten indoor environments.
