The study aims to examine the development of creative and convergent talents, field adaptation abilities, and transformative competencies in students through problem-based learning (PBL) in a capstone design class and targeting early childhood education students. The learners’ experiences was explored and analyzed. In this study, 64 third-year college students participated as research participants in the capstone design class by applying PBL for a total of four months (13 weeks) from April 1 to June 26, 2021, at the Department of Early Childhood Education at D University of Gyeonggi-do. The researcher collected and analyzed journals, discussion materials, reports, and team interviews. Six study participants were selected, and information was collected via journal, discussion material, report, team interview, focus group interview (FGI). As a result of analyzing the learners’ experience in the capstone design class to which PBL was applied, four subject groups, 11 subjects, and 39 semantic structures were derived. As a result of analyzing the experiences of participating in capstone design class with PBL contributed to the early childhood education and university students, the experience of creating new values by promoting creative and convergence problem-solving skills for social problems; coping with tensions and dilemmas; the experience of positive recognition of team projects; the experience of demonstrating professional competence through proactive self-development; and the experience of competence and responsibility for solving social problems as a future-oriented early childhood education expert. This study is expected to provide meaningful implications as basic data for designing and operating a capstone design curriculum for nurturing creative and convergent practical talents and enhancing transformative competencies in the Department of Early Childhood Education at the university in the future.
