This study examines how important the form of capital structure plays a role in the unprecedented employment reduction process of companies during the 1997 national crisis in Korea (1997-1999). Recent foreign studies have conducted empirical tests on the time of the Great Depression in the United States and the 2008 financial crisis in the United States to find that there is a negative effect with very high financial friction factors in the employment environment of companies in the labor market. In other words, it is showed that the restrictions on access to the financing market further accelerate the deterioration of the employment environment of companies at the time of recession and crisis, and in fact, also these results are economically and statistically significance. Based on these empirical results, this study empirically finds how restrictions on access to the capital market, i.e., credit supply reduction, capital procurement constraints, and recovery from banks, affect the employment environment of domestic companies. We find as follows: First, this paper finds that the leverage of firm affect the level of employment of individual firms significantly in labor market. Second, it shows that the maturity structure of short term debt is also economically and statistically an important factor for reducing the employment at the financial crisis in Korea. Third, this paper documents that bank fail is a key credit supply and also increases the unemployment of firms at labor market in Korea. These empirical results imply that financial frictions are another key factor for reducing the employment or increasing the unemployment in labor market of Korea.
