The objective of this study was to examine the specialization degree and regional competitiveness of domestic professional design business in 17 metropolitan cities and provinces. For this, this study used the data on the number of employees presented in the National Statistics Office’s national business survey in 2013~2019 and then analyzed regional share effect based on location quotient and shift-share analysis. Study findings are as follows: First, the current professional design business in Seoul was considerably specialized, but its regional competitiveness was weak. In this vein, it seems to be necessary for government to improve business systems in many ways and support the business more. Second, in such other areas as Daegu, Incheon, Daejeon, Ulsan, Sejong, Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Chungbuk, Chungnam, Gyeongbuk, Gyeongnam and Jeju, current professional design business was not specialized fully, but their regional unique characteristic-based competitiveness was high. In this regard, it seems to be necessary for government to show more active interest and investment in it. Third, in Gwangju, current professional design business was specialized and had regional competitiveness as well. Therefore, it is necessary for government to develop it more and support it continuously. In conclusion, this study seems to be significant in that it could confirm the fact that professional design business’ regional unique characteristic-based growth effect is generally positive in most of the areas other than Seoul in which design business and manpower are concentrated, thus finding out its growth potential and competitiveness. The author hopes study findings will be used as basic data for the regional design industry on which one can establish a foundation for its self-sustaining growth, promote its sustainable development, and make policies to bring about its balanced nationwide development.
