This essay analyses the shifts in the contemporary art scene that are prompted by contemporary condition of images characterized by its overflow and algorithm governmentality based on correlational statistical patterns. The quantitative soar of image is influencing every dimension of contemporary art, ranging from the sense of accepting, selecting and reconstructing images; concepts and methodologies required for its analysis and interpretation; the modus operandi of online platforms including social networks; the process related to the production, distribution and reception of image; to procedures of institutional approval and systems of value attribution. The quantitative increase of images indicates how rapidly the logic of quantity––that assigns value based on measurable numbers including data frequency, correlation and preference––is permeating into the logic of quality in the existing art field that attributes value conforming to the quality of contents. This essay proposes that the logic of quantity based on mass image generates new protocols and induces shifts to the conventional value system within contemporary art fields in South Korea. The discussion will be forked to three specific considerations. Firstly, regardless of how non-fungible token (NFT) suggests diverse possibilities of freedom, transparency and liberation from materiality, I will observe how its boom in the art market is anchored to a ground incompatible to previous concepts of art and how it operates from the perspective of information capitalism. This will be analysed from four angles: the question of authenticity, the terrain and structures for NFT, its relation to platform capitalism and the modes of generating capital value. Secondly, I will examine the timeline and ways in the South Korean art scene, as it started engaging with the dynamics of mass image and data capitalism in the 2010s. This began with the increase of the number of artists as raw data, kind of representing the logic of quantity overwhelming the logic of quality, as well as the politics of social networks as a novel protocol producing, circulating and evaluating mass image that resulted from such increase. During this process, the rise of young project spaces around 2015 and their co-organized exhibition and art fair GOODS (2015) played a key role. These independent spaces are directly proximate to mass data, in terms of their founding motivations, catalyzed by the desire of recognition and responded by their influence on the structural change in the entire art scene. The structural cause that motivated those project spaces was the generation’s institutionalized exclusion due to the increase of the number of artists, while the physical impetus that established them as a new wave and triggered shifts in the art scene was facilitated by smartphones and social networks. By means of these, the agencies and modes of operating the field could undergo changes. Lastly, I will investigate the aspect of how such changing protocol shifts the art value system from a more fundamental dimension. The amount of exhibitions/images exceeding the quantity of biological perception enables only atomized experiences as per individual interests, resulting in the decrease of common grounds for discussions about the fields of contemporary art. This aspect shows that the system of qualitative values, which used to be based on individuality, uniqueness and originality advocated by contemplation, has started shaking. In this regard, I will scrutinize the shifts in the value system predominantly from four perspectives: the validity of selecting criteria, the change in the principles of approval, the decline of criticism and discourses, and the economy of presence and promotion. The basic principle applying to all this is the epistemology of search engine, according to which only the most often-repeated is selected by the institution, rather than the best in quality surviving. At this point, it will be more crucial to consider the influence that algorithmic dynamics––which recognizes difference as error, imposes homogenous harmony and agreement to prevent conflicts and renders discrimination as natural––exerts to the grounds of art that has been employing difference and futility for the sake of critical contemplation.
