This study aims to illuminate the Paris period of one of the most representative Korean painters Unsoung Pai(1900~1978), laying the foundation for reevaluating his activities and art.
There is no need to stress the importance of Pai in the history of Korean modern art.
He was the first Korean modern painter who studied and worked in Europe. In addition, his artistic works, which embody the fusion of East and West aesthetics, are interesting research subjects as they reveal the artist’s hybrid and borderline identity.
Until now, Pai’s work and art have been discussed from various perspectives, including the studies of Frank Hoffmann and Bok-ki Kim, which gave the entire picture of Pai’s work and art in Germany. On the other hand, research on his Paris period is lacking since his stay in France was much shorter than that of Germany, and materials were insufficient to support his work in France. However, records on a powerful Japanese supporter who financed Pai’s private exhibition in Paris suggest the possibility of extending the research and a new approach.
Based on the above, this paper will attempt to explore Pai’s artistic activities in Paris, especially considering the relationship with Japan. I will trace Pai’s work based on the articles and illustrations in the Japanese-French magazine France-Japon, which I newly discovered in France. Also, I will examine the meaning of Pai’s activity in Paris in a complex interrelation between Korea, Japan, and France. I hope this article lays a foundation for an in-depth discussion on the art and work of Unsoung Pai.
