Ahn Gyohwan(安敎煥, 1871-1942) painted True Portraits of the Holy Traces(聖蹟眞像圖) in 1937 which included the life of Confucius with 100 memorable scenes of his lifetime. True Portraits of the Holy Traces paved the way for students and uneducated difficult to understand Chinese to Confucius’ teaching and life. Ahn Gyohwan did Religious Movements of Confucianism with Choseon Confucianism Assembly(朝鮮儒敎會) organized and tried to revive national spirit during the Japanese colonial period by establishing Rokdong Academic School(鹿洞書院) himself. He produced True Portraits of the Holy Traces only to pursue the goal. Each piece of True Portraits of the Holy Traces was introduced in each issuance of periodical(日月時報) published by Choseon Confucianism Assembly until the financial burden emerged for the Organization to keep running. Choseon Confucianism Assembly published book to promote True Portraits of the Holy Traces. True Portraits of the Holy Traces was made based on a wood-block printed Pictures of the Holy Traces of Master Kong(孔夫子聖蹟 圖 ) which Kong Jaeheon(孔在憲) produced with 105 episodes of Confucius’ life in 1904. True Portraits of the Holy Traces was shortened to 100 episodes of pictures from the original(底本) 105 excluding 5 episodes that did not have either character title(題) or brief commentary(讚) with the exception of Looking at a horse at the gate of Wu(望吳門馬) and Emperor Kao of the Han Dynasty sacrifices at Lu(漢高祀魯). There is no clear explanation of how Looking at a horse at the gate of Wu(望吳門馬) and Emperor Kao of the Han Dynasty sacrifices at Lu(漢高祀魯) were chosen into True Portraits of the Holy Traces. In light of the fact that when painting True Portraits of the Holy Traces supplementing character title(題) and brief commentary(讚) Pictures of the Holy Traces of Master Kong(孔夫子聖蹟圖), it seems that he used other versions of Pictures of the Holy Traces of Confucius. The study looks into motives and meanings of Korean version of True Portraits of the Holy Traces.
