Background: The aging population causes various social problems regarding health and safety of the elderly. In particular, in the case of elderly people who live alone with economic difficulties and social isolation along with aging, it is likely to lead to life damage because they cannot make quick judgments or take proper measures in case of an emergency. Therefore, this study aims to understand the necessities and usual rules of conduct that the elderly must bring out on their own, paramedics or rescue workers in an emergency situation that determines the survival of the elderly living alone. And also It suggests a way to store and identify essentials.
Methods: First, by referring to references and government statistical data, the current status and vulnerability of the elderly and the elderly living alone are understood, and the existing safety system related to the rescue and emergency situation of the elderly is identified. It will then draw key elements necessary for the needs and development of stakeholders through in-depth interviews with social workers, life instructors, visiting nurses and rescue and paramedics, observation surveys on medication habits and storage behavior. Based on the above data and analysis results of the survey, an implementation strategy is established, and a "safe card" and a "safe box" are developed.
Result: Establish a development strategy that considers the cognitive and physical specificity and social and economic vulnerabilities of the elderly living alone. For the safe structure and first aid of the elderly living alone, implementation rules that all stakeholders sympathize with are established and shared through visualization of information. And we propose the design of a "safe card" that can record personal health information, a "safe box" that can store cell phones and written "safe cards" necessary for contacting guardians, and essential medications for emergency.
Conclusion: The development and distribution of "safe cards" and "safe boxes" will be of practical help in alleviating the damage to the elderly living alone, especially vulnerable to emergencies. In addition, the attempt to solve social welfare problems through design can be of academic significance in that it is a convergence study between social welfare and design studies.
