Background : In a multi-device system, a user participates in the service experience by interacting with networked multi-devices. The user experience is influenced by each device's usability and the inter-usability of the system—the ease with which users switch between devices. Despite previous research on inter-usability, there have been limited discussions on the various types of multi-device systems with different functionality and features of devices, diverse user context.
Methods : This study examines cases of user-system interaction involving more than two devices, especially Internet of Things (IoT) systems. I qualitatively examined the interaction of 110 cases between a user and devices using a visualizing framework and classified the types of interaction. Insights on how inter-usability can be practically approached for different types of systems were derived by understanding the interface elements of the cases in different groups.
Result : The major elements affecting different types of multi-device interaction have been investigated as follows: user experiential benefits from the multi-devices interaction, the sizes, types, and availability of user interfaces, proximity of the user to each device, interruptions in user interaction due to changes in time, distance, and purpose, and the number of involved users. From the insights, I suggested the experiential benefit from the device composition as the prior inter-usability factor influencing the types of systems. The types of systems affect whether a designer needs to concentrate on a seamless device transition, feedback providing reliability on system connection, or instant information so that a user can perceive system interaction for system continuity.
Conclusion : This study contributes practical knowledge to help designers understand various types of multi-device systems on IoT product cases and discusses the inter-usability of the different system types.
