As craft beers and microbreweries became ‘hip’ in the early 2010s, the racialized tastes and practices of seeking ‘better’ beers have reshaped whiteness in Gyeongridan-gil, Seoul. This emerging whiteness has mirrored not only white privilege as cultural and political advantages, but also the objectification, exotification, and commodification of white bodies in a non-white society. In this vein, this article explores a situated whiteness based on craft beer pubs in Gyeongridangil. By reviewing the literature of whiteness and the racialized discourses and practices regarding craft beer, I shed light on how whiteness is (re)assembled in and through the racialized landscape of craft beer. In doing so, this article highlights a scene of racialization in Korean society, where whiteness is socially constructed as otherness embodying both superiority and inferiority, while suggesting a new possibility to understand ambivalent whiteness moving beyond the western-centric, homogeneous view.
