Urban tourism has become complicated with the emergence of new urban tourism, which has transformed many sites into ‘tourist destinations.’ Ordinary urban neighborhoods that were not initially planned for tourism are examples of how new urban tourists’ desires for seeking ‘authentic urban experience’ have expanded tourism impacts at the neighborhood scale, and has brought about controversial consequences to residents’ everyday life. This phenomenon indicates that understanding residents’ perceptions of tourism has become more crucial. While research on this topic has been one of the most dominant areas of tourism studies, geographers’ contributions have been limited, despite understanding tourism-induced neighborhood change is a way to uncover people-place relationships. Drawing upon such a perspective, this paper reviews a few representative tourism theories and concepts in understanding residents’ perceptions. It suggests geographical perspectives can help enrich the understanding of controversial neighborhood change triggered by new urban tourism.
