Indigenous interpretative traditions of Islam has been widely developed since 17th century in China, with the great efforts of Chinese muslim scholars to interpret Islam through chinese language and traditions. As a result, we could see Confucianistic muslim scholar like Liu Zhi (劉智) who reconstruct Chinese Islamic worldview through Islamic mystical philosophy and neo-confucianistic way of thinking, as well as muslim scholars who put more stress on the original languages and meanings of Islam. In this paper, we focus on one of the great muslim scholars of Yunnan, Ma Dexin(馬德新) who had been also a leading figure of Yunnan panthay rebellion in 19th century. Ma had been experiencing new tendencies claiming to return to fundamental faith of Islam. And at the same time, he had been struggling to set new identities of Yunnan Muslims to overcome severe conflicts between majority Han zu(漢族) and minority Yunnan muslims after rebellion. Based on these circumstances, Ma’s Chinese translation of Maqṣad-i Aqṣā(the furthest goal), that is Daoxingjiujing 道行究竟was chosen to seek his own understanding on Chinese Islam. In his translaton Ma divided the text into two parts and chose completely different methods to convey their meanings. These different approaches are to be considered to co-relate Islamic worldview in original text with Liu Zhi’s indigenous interpretation of Islam. And analysi s on techni cal terms i n persi an texts and i ts chi nese translations are regarded to show Ma’s unique understanding of Chinese Islam.
