Background : With the commercialization of various artificial intelligence agents, users have more opportunities to engage in social and emotional interactions with agents. Although the interactive behavior between users and agents may vary depending on how agents are anthropomorphized, existing commercialized agents are designed to have a single character regardless of varying users’ characteristics. To this end, this study examined the user-agent relationships and the corresponding application of design elements based on interpersonal relationships.
Methods : First, literature review on anthropomorphism was conducted along with the study on interpersonal relationships in order to examine the relationships between users and agents. Next, the representative cases of commercialized agents were analyzed to derive design elements of the agents based on the type of interpersonal relationship.
Result : This study presented six types of interpersonal relationships between users and agents as friends, rivals, teachers, students, supervisors and employees. Based on six types, a comparative analysis of domestic and international cases was further conducted to examine the following four design elements of the agent: embodiment, emotion, dialogue, and personality.
Conclusion : In this study, we investigated the users-agents interactions based on anthropomorphism and interpersonal relationships in order to better understand how the interaction between users and agents changed based on different types of relationships between users and agents. The findings of this study can contribute not only to better understand but also to design the user-agent interaction, specifically considering the context in which the agent is used.
