Background : The online production and circulation of news enable the spread of accurate, fake, and unverified news. While unverified information—allegations, opinions, misinformation, weak arguments, and exaggerated expressions—in the news is not the wilful distortion of the truth, it is problematic if readers whose critical reflection abilities are undermined mistake it as confirmed truth. As expert fact-checking takes at least a few hours and the trial of allegations can take months, readers can be constantly exposed to less-than-factual articles during the time.
Methods : To defend the factuality, validity, and objectivity in the news, this study reports the design and effectiveness of the rTag view UI concept that allows for directly linking related articles to sentences with compromised factuality in the news, for readers to compare the articles and to recognize potential inaccuracies. The effectiveness of the rTag view was tested with an online survey questionnaire. 200 participants in their 30’s and 40’s were randomly assigned to control (the regular view) and experimental (the rTag view) groups in the equal number. They read the Mask and Testkit articles and responded to questions measuring (1) the comprehension scores, and (2) the perceived reliability of the inaccurate information in the original articles.
Result : In the experiment group, the comprehension scores were significantly higher, while the perceived reliability scores were lower. With the rTag view, higher percentages of participants rated the reliability based on what is stated in the news. Reading the linked articles in the rTag view encouraged the experimental group to grasp the factuality of the issues better, and to be more critical of what they read.
Conclusion : Though the rTag view does not verify the factuality of news, it suggests parts of the news need to be fact-checked, which improves the reader’s media literacy. The rTag view will be particularly effective for time-sensitive information where updates accumulate and factuality changes over time such as COVID-19 news, and news stories that require balanced and diverse perspectives. Presently the rTag view is proposed as a participatory service concept that runs on user participation, but with AI-based deception detection technology, automated linking of related articles is conceivable in the future.
