Background : As the changes in users’ lifestyle have influenced their consumption patterns in recent days, lifestyle research is gradually becoming important for understanding and predicting the users’ behaviors. This study investigated the characteristics of main lifestyle of the subjects who are living in the apartments and categorized their lifestyle patterns derived from the investigation, thereby analyzing the correlation between those categorized lifestyles and design factors of floor materials in residential space in order to suggest the basic data on the development direction of design in floor materials considering the lifestyles of users.
Methods : First, literature review was performed on the conceptual definition and analysis of lifestyle as well as the changes and characteristics of floor finishing materials from the theoretical perspective. Second, a survey was conducted on the importance of demographic factors, lifestyle, and floor materials design in living spaces, targeting 304 apartment residents in Seoul and Gyeonggi area. Third, the implication was derived through comprehensively analyzing the correlation with regard to preferential factors in the design of floor materials of residential space for each lifestyle pattern using AIO analysis method.
Result : The lifestyle patterns of the subjects were categorized into a family-oriented happiness pursuit type, a health-oriented stability pursuit type, and an individuality-oriented practical pursuit type. The ‘family-oriented happiness pursuit type’ valued convenience, brand name, color, pattern and raw material, whereas the ‘individuality -oriented practical pursuit type’ weighted to usability with easy maintenance, color, pattern, raw material, shape and differentiated design. All three groups commonly emphasized an importance of the creativity and aesthetic factor in the design of floor materials in residential space.
Conclusion : From a lifestyle analysis on the survey results in this study, three groups with different characteristics could be derived and the thoughts of each group on design of flooring materials in residential space were identified. With this opportunity, it is hoped that the findings of this study would be used as the fundamental data for correctly understanding the trend of rapidly changing consumer market and for developing the design of floor materials reflecting the lifestyle of users.
