Background
Christianity accounts for the highest percentage of the world's population, with 31.2% of the world's population according to the 2015 Pew Research Center statistics. Christianity, along with Hellenism, forms the roots of Western culture and has a profound impact on modern life. Therefore, this study aims to derive the color characteristics of the Old Testament by analyzing Tekhelet in Christianity as a convergence study of religion and color.
Methods
The literature review analysis was adopted as the method for this study. Text Bibles are Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia 4th edition, New International Version, New King James Version, American Standard Version, Korean Revised Version, New Korean Revised Version, and Standard New Translation in Korean.
Result
When the use of Tekhelet was analyzed, regionally Israel and Gentile's nations were divided, and by the times ca. 1,500 B.C. the Exodus, ca. 1,000 B.C. Solomon Kingdom, and ca. 500 B.C. the destruction of Israel were divided. The most items used by Tekhelet were of holy space-related items for Jehovah at 49.0%. Priests' garments and Israelites' garments at 38.8% were followed. The remaining items at 12.2% represented royal palace, high-ranking officers, and high goods etc. of the foreign nations. To Israel, tekhelet proved out more color when used in a single color and four color schemes of blue, purple, red, and white were typical. This four-color scheme was used primarily for spatial use, and the five-color scheme with gold thread was used in connection with the chief priest's primary garments. To Gentile nations, tekhelet was used in the same hierarchy as argaman which means purple.
Conclusion
Tekhelet in the Old Testament appeared to Israel in an age of salvation and prosperity as Jehovah's blessing, and in the time of Israel's destruction, it was used to describe the splendor of the Gentile nations. Tekhelet was used in the space and clothing associated with Jehovah to symbolize Jehovah and to connect Israel with Jehovah. And so it was the highest color to Israel. Argaman as purple, commonly known as the color of kings and nobles, was lower in rank than Tekhelet. But in the Gentile nations, Tekhelet applied to idols, not to Jehovah, and expressed secular values on the same level as argaman.
