Background
As the industry has developed, product design has played numerous roles with varying functions. Even in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, called the Manufacturing Renaissance, product design is continually evolving to meet the new era.
Methods
Through this paper, I would like to suggest a new product design process that can be effectively used in the evolving manufacturing environment and technological landscape.
Result
I propose this would be applied to future product designer training. The first step is the understanding phase, beginning with the understanding of the manufacturing renaissance, which centers around intelligent manufacturing, IoT-enabled manufacturing, and cloud manufacturing. This then establishes the concept of 'new consumerism' as is represented by 'prosumers and producers' and 'produsage.' This understanding phase concludes with a summary of the 'additive manufacture' technology. The second step is the practice phase. A small design project carried out utilizing the 'additive manufacture'. Using the primary digital tools necessary for product design development leads to '3D modeling', '3D rendering' and '3D printing'. With the help of these digital devices, product designers can dramatically reduce the time spent on design development, ensuring that they can spend their time focusing on creativity and innovative ideas.
Conclusion
Product Design Process 2.0 is a process of maximizing innovation that leads to solving complex problems beyond simple problem solving by applying decorative elements. This concept of product design process 2.0 will drive various changes throughout the industry in the future, and product design education should be a process of understanding and practicing these concepts. This paper presents the necessity and direction of product design education 2.0 required in this new industrial environment.
