Background: Over-sized and flashy advertising signs in South Korea are diminishing the value and regional attribute of the cities and creating a cluttered streetscape. Advertising signs are mediums that communicate information to consumers and they are a typical component of a building structure and streetscape. However, advertising signs in commercial districts of a capitalist society are overusing highly saturated, conspicuous colors and bold, decorative fonts and their oversized advertising signs that are mismatching to the surrounding landscape cause an imbalance with buildings, becoming a main culprit that ruins the cityscape.
Methods: The present study investigated the issues of previous advertising signs and streetscape by conducting a survey on the features of Jangseungpo-dong in City of Geoje and on the condition of advertising signs before and after the cityscape improvement project. While working out the design, we revised the draft for the design of advertising signs based on the consultation with experts, and worked out the direction for future design and colors. We also extracted the colors of advertising signs that had already been installed among the targeted signs of the first and second round of the cityscape project. Then, we charted the colors and analyzed the trend of color usage before and after the advertising sign project.
Result: The result of analysis showed that previous signs had been using primary colors on the board-type signs of various sizes. It also showed that the streetscape was being ruined by the installation of advertising signs with flashy fonts and colors on windows or on the outer wall of a building.
Conclusion: As the result of the present research, we discovered that after the sign improvement project, the features of the advertising signs became simplified and changed from the primary-color-based signs with highly saturated colors and indiscriminant fonts, and mismatching characters to signs with simple icons, a limited number of fonts and colors per business and the usage of lowly saturated colors for background and letters. As the present study has the limitation that it analyzed the photos of installed signs, a follow-up study will be conducted to examine the details about the colors of signs through color assessment in the field once the installation of all the advertising signs in the target area is completed.
