Background: Although the road information sign should give priority to the functional aspect of information transmission so that all the drivers who use the vehicle can quickly and accurately present the desired information, the limit of accepting the consideration and convenience of the color blind person, the elderly person and the foreigner experiencing the visual inconvenience. Through this case study, the research was carried out for the purpose of deriving implications and design improvement directions in the aspect of universal design.
Methods: First, I understand the general concept of road sign and the present state of design, and understand the basic understanding of universal design and visual characteristics of visual weak. Second, I analyzed the literature related to domestic and foreign studies and found some important implications from the point of view of users and universal design. Third, we classified the examples of road signs in Korea and Japan into three categories, and evaluated the experts on the five - point scale, and suggested design implications and improvement directions.
Result: Nominal sign covers have resulted in the unnecessarily large amount of information for naming, mixed systems, and excessive use of color to cause driver confusion. The road name guide sign was evaluated highly in terms of functionality and acceptability by providing road name and place name information at the same time. In addition, the case of Japan was highly evaluated in terms of being faithful to the functional role of Korea.
Conclusion: As the road sign cover is directly connected with the safety of the driver, a design improvement plan is required to simplify the cover information system and enhance intuitiveness so that only necessary information can be accurately and promptly displayed. It should also consider ways to increase visibility and readability that can be easily perceived at a distance by minimizing driver confusion by controlling excessive color usage.
