Focusing on the BDI and the HRCI, this study analyzes the leverage effect and the long-memory process on the volatility of marine freight rates before and after the global financial crisis (GFC). The key findings of this study are summarized as follows. First, as a result of estimating the conditional variance model, the BDI had a reverse leverage effect after the GFC, and the HRCI had no leverage effect. Second, the long-memory analysis using the Hurst exponent indicated that the long-memory effect of marine freight volatility, expressed as an absolute value, on marine freight exchange rate was reduced after the GFC. In addition, long- memory of HRCI volatility was found to be greater than that of BDI volatility after the GFC. The results of this study will be meaningful in setting strategic directions for suppressing marine freight risks in the shipping and port sectors.
