The American health reform movement of the nineteenth century was formed with the trend of social reform movement to overcome various social problems such as poor medical environment, rapid change society, pandemic epidemic, slave liberation, women’s right. This social reform movement was supported by the formation of the positive and optimistic thoughts and Christian ideas for human being. In the health reform movement, women participated more actively than men. There were two major factors. The first was that women themselves felt that they were in an unhealthy state, and the second was the emergence of middle-class women and the social and cultural atmosphere in which they reorganized traditional women’s roles. Catherine Beecher was a representative woman who developed a reform movement by tightly combining the areas of health and home. She tried to improve women’s social status in the society, claiming women’s equality and rights. However, Catherine Beecher rejected access to femininity beyond the more socially acceptable image of a healthy woman at home. She argued through education that women need to understand the laws of physiology and health, suggesting that women are chosen by God as guardians of health. In her view, the sense of responsibility imposed on women by God may seem to confer to women a special and somewhat liberating status, but she clearly defined the gender role of men and women on the basis of Christian teaching and the laws of nature. Therefore, she did not want to go further for the formation of an equal gender relationship, despite the fact that she brought up a new field of women’s specialty, ‘Domestic Science’, into American society. As evidenced by the notion of Catherine Beecher, most health reformers did not escaped much from the typical gender paradigm. In the framework of scientific theories, they attempted to reconstruct the concept of domesticity and to secure the space and role of women in the changing social environment, but there was a limit to expanding to form an equal gender relationship. Such limitations are fundamentally derived from the physiology of health reformers, the identification of the laws of nature and the laws of creation that are believed in Christianity. In other words, in order to secure the legitimacy of scientific explanation from the contents of religion, it was difficult to go beyond the framework of traditional gender divisions. Therefore, Beecher’s efforts to achieve perfect individuals and society can not but be construed as an attempt to pursue ‘genderized utopia’.
