Recently, some firms provide explanation about an inspiration source of the product design when introducing their products to consumers. Examples include a vase inspired by a lake or a massage chair inspired by a yacht. The current research has the objective to systematically examine the effect of communicating the inspiration source to the consumers on product evaluation. For this purpose, two behavioral experiments have been conducted. In study 1, results show that consumers evaluate a product as more unique when consumers are given information about the inspiration source compared to no such information. Moreover, we find that the effect is driven by consumer perception that the product with inspiration source information is made by a creator’s motivation to express his or her special experiences. Study 2 results show that this effect of inspiration source information on product perception mitigates when consumer inference about a creator’s motivation to express his or her experiences through creating a product is weakened. Specifically, when the information suggesting a “team” rather than an “individual” as a creator is given to consumers, they do not think that the product is made by a creator’s motivation to express his or her experiences, thereby, do not perceive the product as unique. This further supports the notion that information about a product design’s inspiration source gives consumers the perception that the product embeds the special self-expression of the creator, elevating the uniqueness of the product. The paper contributes to the recent literature on consumer favorable reactions towards products perceived to have a human touch in production process.
