The ‘Sochundaeyuhui’(1902.12.4.―1903.1.25.) is the first for-profit performance planning attempted in the space of an indoor theater in the history of Korean performing arts. The possibility that The Story of Chunhyang and The Story of Shimcheong, performed at the Sochundaeyuhui of Hyupyulsa were more likely to have taken the hwageuk(verbal drama) format led by the gwangdae(clown) rather than the changgeuk format, was verified by analyzing travelogues of foreigners such as W.F.Sands and E.Bourdaret during this era. The Gwangdae Hwageuk performed during the enlightenment period in Korea was developed and transmitted into the jaedam play format (talk show) and the pansori-type gwangdae hwageuk that targeted the rich upper-class audience. Hyupyulsa chose to put the pansori-type gwangdae hwageuk which met the taste of the upper-class audience on the stage. In discussing the origin of Changgeuk, this hypothesis suggests the need to examine the formation process of Changgeuk under the influence of adjacent traditional performances, such as the performance activities of the clown performers.
