Background
The purpose of this study was to analyze the trends of domestic studies related to healthcare design. Studies on healthcare have been also steadily accumulated in the realm of design research in the same way as in other academic fields amid the changes in the society such as the transition to aged society, extension of average lifespan, and heightened interest in healthy life. Thus, this study was intended to set the basic course for succeeding studies by examining current status of domestic studies on healthcare design based on meta analysis.
Methods
In this study, the meta analysis was performed of 1,117 domestic theses on healthcare design which had been published in the academic journals placed on the list of the National Research Foundation of Korea to date since November 2018. We (1) defined the scope of study on healthcare design through conceptualization and typification, and, based on that, (2) selected a total of 52 key words for search and identified the subjects of studies through the KCI system, and then (3) performed analyses on the trends of studies which were manifested by time series, methodologies, themes of studies, etc.
Result
The findings of this study are as follows: (1) Since the term ‘healthcare’ was first used in a healthcare design paper in 2002, studies on healthcare design have steadily increased in quantity. (2) As in general design studies, empirical research methods have been used mainly to obtain visible and practical results. (3) In particular, user-centered studies on space and environment have held a majority.
Conclusion
This study has the academic significance of conducting meta analysis on the entire healthcare design studies for the first time. If further studies develop this meta analysis, it will be possible to find new research puzzles and subjects that should be noted and new approaches and perspectives that have not been tried.
