This study examined how the three components of materialism – acquisition centrality (centrality), possession-defined success (success), and acquisition as the pursuit of happiness (happiness) – have influence on conspicuous consumption. We also investigated how transformation expectations mediates in the relationships between each of the three components and conspicuous consumption. In addition, after dividing transformation expectation into four sub-dimensions, this study looked at how each of the transformation expectation plays mediating roles in the process. To empirically test the theoretical arguments, we conducted a survey with 393 respondents. The results confirmed our predictions that centrality and success were positively related, and happiness was negatively related to conspicuous consumption, respectively. Specifically, success increased transformation expectations and, in consequence, conspicuous consumption, but the transformation expectations mediated the negative relationship between happiness and conspicuous consumption. Among four-sub dimensions of transformation expectation, the only transformation of self and other’s perception of self significantly mediated such relationships. For centrality, only a direct relationship with conspicuous consumption was observed without the mediation of transformation expectations being significant. Based upon the results, theoretical as well as managerial implications are discussed.
