Background: Products involved in network connection and IoT(Internet of Things) work together with other products as a system that provides expanded benefits to users. When designers design a user interface for wirelessly connecting devices, there are many complex issues around the multiple devices and interface to consider. These include the devices' features, the newly-formed system features, technological issues, security requirements, user and contextual issues. The goal of this study is to organize and simplify the factors which designers consider when they design user interface of devices association. The study ultimately aims to provide a tool helping designers efficient design decision.
Methods: This study qualitatively examined the design factors from the classified 102 cases of connecting devices systems. It proceeded as follows: 1) the design factors demonstrated from many previous references have been researched, 2) I looked into cases of connecting devices system and classified them via an affinity diagram as comparing design factors of the cases in different groups provided insight on major factors, 3) finally, a decision making procedure for device connection interface has been suggested based on the relationships between factors.
Result: The major design factors have been investigated as follows: duration and location of the purposed interaction, controllability and perceptibility of product interface, security needs and connection status. These factors have an effect on network technology and cardinality, usage of additional interfaces or channels, and methods of authorization and certification.
Conclusion: Finally, this study suggested a design decision tool for device association interface. It presents major design factors with related design decision issues. This study contributes practical knowledge which helps designers to understand and consider the relationships among complex issues regarding connecting devices user interface.
