Background: With the advancement of technology, people no longer have to physically be in the same space in order to communicate, but instead use computers to interact with each other. Emoticons were invented to solve the problem that non-verbal cues cannot be communicated in computer-mediated communication. There are three types of emoticons: text, pictorial, and animated. Previous studies on emoticons have focused on differences in text-emoticon usage based on cultural and regional differences. However, there is little done with a focus on cultural difference in usage of other forms of emoticons, such as pictorial and animated ones. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine how eastern and western people use pictorial and animated emoticons differently.
Methods: In this study, pictorial and animated emoticons in both eastern and western IM services were compared and analyzed based on the existing studies on emoticons and cultural difference between east and west.
Result: Western IM services use emoji as pictorial emoticon, and GIF as animated emoticon. In contrast, while eastern IM services also use emoji as pictorial emoticon, they use character sticker both as pictorial and animated emoticon. Regarding emoji, while western IM services classify emoticons by their functionality, eastern IM services do not. Also, it was found that the percentage of face-facial expression emojis was much higher in eastern IM services than in western IM services.
Conclusion: The results indicated that emoticons in western IM services are centered on direct and functional communication while those in eastern IM services focus on indirect and emotional expression.
