All knowledge always implies truth, but it is not easy to determine what truth actually is. This is because truth is a concept of multi-layered meanings and because the concepts of ‘truth’ are various. For example: unconditional and absolute truth; conditional, restrictive and relative truth; ontological truth; logical truth; and others. Moreover, there are various theoretical opinions regarding truth, dependent upon one’s point of view, such as: the correspondence theory, the coherence theory, pragmatism, the consensus theory, and others. This paper considers truth in its various multi-layered meanings from a hermeneutical point of view.
Why does hermeneutics get involved in the issue of truth? Hermeneutics is the study of comprehension, and it tries to grasp the truth of all understanding. Human beings have a spiritual essence that moves them to mediate all things within themselves. Our world is the world of mediated immediacy achieved through the understanding of the mind. At the same time, it is the world of understanding that is achieved through the mind’s mediation. It might seem obvious, but it is impossible for humans not to be able to understand truth. Hermeneutical truth is based on the basic position that the problems of truth are fundamentally a problem of understanding. From the inevitable relationships between truth and comprehension, we become aware of the fact that truth needs to be understood and analyzed. These realizations eventually draw problems of truth to the basic problem of hermeneutical truth.
Understanding and analyzing the ‘dasein’ of ‘faktical life’, Heidegger understands hermeneutical truth in terms of the ‘destiny of being’ in time and history. Gadamer borrows this approach; and after Heidegger and Gadamer, the problems of hermeneutical truth have become questions limited to possibilities of the objectivity and comprehension of truth as manifested in history. Be that as it may, in the present author’s opinion comprehension is fundamentally and unconditionally rooted in the very ‘horizon of being’; so it is essential to understand truth, not primarily from the horizon of history, but from the horizon of absolute being.
