It was Martin Heidegger who brought a new interest in metaphysics to the era of, so called, “anti-metaphysics.” In his book “Being and Time” (originally titled “Sein und Zeit”), Heidegger once diagnosed that questions of being were buried in oblivion. He cited “ontological difference” as the reason behind such diagnosis. In order words, metaphysics had never sought separation being from beings. Accordingly, this study is designed to examine whether Heidegger’s criticism is reasonable in light of the academic purpose of metaphysics.
Thomas Aquinas, a representative philosopher of Scholasticism, distinguished essence from being and being from beings, by understanding beings through being-in-itself. Despite that, Heidegger did criticize Scholasticism by adopting the concept of ontological difference since there was a big methodological gap between the two scholars with regard to understanding being. From the very departure of their understanding of being, they showed sharp differences: while Heidegger understood the meaning of being through phenomenological approaches toward Dasein, Thomas Aquinas concluded being in itself through essence/instinct-based approaches toward beings. Such differences should be the starting point to understand and examine Heidegger’s criticism of Scholasticism with respect to ontological difference. Two philosophers had different grounds for metaphysical methodology, interpretations of being, and understandings of being-in-itself as ground. Only after understanding such differences, we are able to construe what Martin Heidegger meant by saying ontological difference.
From the two philosophers’ philosophical grounds for being, we can recognize that being and beings are not exclusive from one another when interpreting the concept of being, despite the ontological gap between two concepts. This is also found in the two philosophers’ notion that being and beings are complementary and defining each other. Being without beings is hollow, and beings without are at risk of losing the ground for being in itself.
