As out-of-home(OOH) advertising is currently displaying the possibility of using various types of creative and the concept of IMC, it is essential to do innovative theoretical and practical research on the measurement of exposure, which surpasses the simple counting of the number of exposure. This study examines OOH, particularly the transit media, by comparing bus external ads and subway screen-door ads that are widely used recently. This study notes that the formation of advertising vehicle affects the amount of information and attention rate. At the same time, it should also be considered that OOH media effects are determined by the other mass media weights such as TV, newspaper or Internet, given that the OOH vehicle is treated as a minor advertising vehicle in media-mix strategy. Therefore, the brand familiarity needs to be controlled for in measuring the effectiveness of the OOH media.
The results of this study show that the brand familiarity and the pattern of transit media placement form a complex relationship with advertising effects. First, the effect of the band familiarity varies with the pattern of exposure. The exposure to subway screen-door ads appears to be more likely to facilitate consumers’recognition and recall cognitively than the exposure to bus-external. Naturally, the media-mix of bus and subway ads shows a better result in cognitive responses than the individual placement of each media vehicle does.
However, when the number of exposure is limited to one or two, brand familarity appears to have little influence on consumers’ attitude change. An interesting result is that the media-mix ad effectiveness depends on the brand familiarity. When a brand was unfamiliar, additional exposures of media-mix ads increased consumers’ intention to invest on that brand to a greater degree than the exposure to the individual media did. However, when a brand was familiar, regardless of the type of the media, limited numbers of additional exposure did not make a significant change in consumers’ behavior. This result implies the importance of media-mix ads in the transit media especially when the brand is not familiar.
